Beginning programmers are much better served by simple text editors vs. Further, IDEs are often too much tool for the job. While a coder could sit down at any terminal and begin working in Vim, that isn't true for any IDE. It takes time to adjust that world, to play god, to create shortcuts and hotkeys, to get used to different command structures and UI. Most IDEs create entire worlds where developers can create, but creating requires configuration. This has led users to literally turn Atom into Vim, unable to let go of the past, unwilling to fully embrace the future of code editing. ![]() Most importantly for users who didn't start coding in the last five years, there is a Vim Mode package. It has cross-platform editing, four UIs, eight syntax themes and integrates with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and Node.js. Atom is a free, open-source text editor that bills itself as being "hackable to the core," allowing for multiple customizations. Take Atom, one of the more popular IDEs/editors. Vim has a small footprint, low latency, fast startup, allows for more screen space, customizable and most importantly, once the muscle-memory has been ingrained, it's nearly impossible to switch to something else.Ĭontinues Carter: "Our fingers are often the bottleneck between thinking up code and getting it in the app, so that’s where folks look to optimize shortcuts." It seems silly but that kind of pivot takes energy." I got the job, a family, and side projects. It takes energy to pivot to a new editor. On an emotional and professional level, I can’t really afford that. "Since then it’s become a question of 'code speed.' If I start with a new IDE or even switch to something like Emacs, I’ll slow down. "The reason I avoided IDEs to begin with was that back when I was getting into Vim, like a decade ago, it was an extra license to look into," says Vim user John Carter (not of Mars). It's the same reason I am still using Notepad to compose and not some fancy text editor or CMS tool. ![]() While there are many IDEs on the market, there's no reason to use one if you don't have to use one. As my father would attest, using his Microsoft Zune long after its support ran out, if it ain't broke. The consensus among many Vim/Emacs users creates a picture many tech users from a certain generation would be familiar with. ![]() Vim and Emacs users, once at each other's throats, seem to have implemented each other's keybindings (a thing they actually do) to take on a common enemy - any modern IDE. It's less a war at this point than a grumbling shuffle of ingrained habit and stubborn resistance to change. The endless war between Vim and Emacs users has continued ad nauseam over the years. And, though we hate to say it, both have reached a point where neither seems to really want to fade off into the sunset. Both are used in coding, editing, and administering systems. Emacs, as we well know, is a “maze of twisty little passages, all different,” (an old programmer’s joke that came from the game Colossal Cave Adventure) while Vim (and Vi before it) offers an arrow-controlled universe of keyboard shortcuts. The origins of this war harken back to Usenet groups in the 1980s, a time when Vi and Emacs were the primary tools used for coding. We love what we grew up with, be it Star Trek jokes, Vim, or Emacs. Like a dog refusing to walk on wet grass, there always seemed to be a bit of resistance to changing up a routine. We tested the oil-based version of Dark Walnut on oak plywood, poplar, pine, fir, oak, and yellow birch. You can easily do this on a piece of scrap wood that’s the same type of wood you are using. Like with paint colors, it is always a good idea to do a test stain first. How do different types of wood look with dark walnut stain? Keep that in mind as you are considering this color and decide on what kind of vibe you want for the whole room. Dark gray and black undertones were prevalent on each type of wood.Īs with any paint or stain color, the lighting and other items in the room will greatly impact the look and feel. With that said, we did several tests with the oil-based Dark Walnut on different types of wood as pictured below. It’s hard to pinpoint the precise undertones for stain colors as they change based on the natural grain of the wood. Also, it’s important to note that the undertones and tints will vary depending on the type of wood you use. Is dark walnut stain cool or warm?īecause of the purple-ish and black undertones, Dark Walnut falls within the cool color group. Wondering which to use? Here’s a guide that explains the difference between polyurethane and polyacrylic. Water-based poly will remain clear for the lifetime of the project, so it’s safe to use over light woods like maple without worrying about yellowing. Oil-based poly is best for darker types of wood that are warm enough to hide the yellowish-amber hue. Using polyurethane also adds a yellow or amber tint that gets stronger over time. When applied to water-based or oil-based wood stains, oil-based poly will continue to darken the wood and stain as time goes on. Oil-based polyurethane can dramatically change the color of stained and unstained wood. Will the stain get darker with polyurethane? ![]() Additionally, applying polyurethane will also influence the shade of the final result. However, it’s important to note that the type of wood you are using will significantly impact the way the stain takes to the surface. While the wood grain still shows through, the color isn’t as rich as the water-based version. The oil-based version of Minwax Dark Walnut has a slightly yellower tint. It’s also much thicker for an easier application. It showcases the wood grain beautifully and a single coat is dry in an hour. The water-based version of Minwax Dark Walnut is rich and dark brown. The difference between Dark Walnut as an oil-based stain and a water-based stain is apparent when viewed side-by-side. We used Water-Based Minwax Dark Walnut on these Oregon coasters! Davis is, at this point in her career, manifestly a happy young woman, and her joy of performance spills over into her character and inspires the actors around her, so that although the movie sometimes gets giggly, it never gets distracted or loses its energy level. ![]() The movie’s sense of fun is infectious and saves the material when it starts to sag. Preparing for “Earth Girls,” he seems to have studied “ Little Shop of Horrors” and the works of John Waters, and he gives us a science-fiction musical where the art direction is so flamboyant it almost should be billed along with the actors. His previous film was the strange, difficult “Absolute Beginners,” in which he showed a visual style that was willing to go to any length to make a point. The movie was directed by Julien Temple, who has had a considerable underground reputation ever since his cult Sex Pistols movie, “The Great Rock and Roll Swindle,” a decade a ago. This is fairly familiar subject matter in the movies (as in “ Starman” and “ My Stepmother Is an Alien”), but “Earth Girls” peps it up by setting the movie in a Day-Glo, instantly disposable, Southern California culture where even aliens with their fur would not attract a whole lot of attention. The aliens emerge as three fairly good-looking guys (led by Jeff Goldblum), and after they all go out for a night on the town, romance blossoms between the Davis and Goldblum characters.Ī lot of the humor in “Earth Girls Are Easy” depends on the ways the aliens misunderstand the everyday details of Earth culture. They are stranded on Earth when their ship sinks in Davis’ pool, and so to make them blend, in she offers them a complete head-to-toe beauty makeover. The aliens are nice guys, but hungry and clumsy and covered with fur. But the next day her love life begins to look up, when three aliens crash-land their spaceship in her swimming pool. This does not work, since it turns out her boyfriend already has another woman on the hook. The boss at her beauty salon ( Julie Brown) suggests a complete change of image and makes her over into a platinum blond. Her boyfriend ( Charles Rocket) doesn’t seem to be interested any longer. The manicurist is played by Geena Davis, who won the supporting actress Oscar this spring for “ The Accidental Tourist.” Although two movies could not possibly be more different, the characters played by Davis are somewhat similar: optimistic, openhearted, trusting women who can’t help themselves when they see a guy in trouble.Īs the movie opens, Valerie, the Davis character, is a manicurist in trouble. ![]() This is also a problem with third-party screen-mirroring solutions with cross-platform compatibility – they only work on certain devices. Niether Miracast or Airplay will work with devices such as digital signage players, Blu-Ray player, or document camera. If you have a compatible receiver attached to your display, you can use these protocols to mirror your screen wirelessly. Screen mirroring protocols such as Apple AirPlay and Windows Miracast are built into most computers and many mobile devices. Screen mirroring systems use a variety of ways to transmit and receive the data, and understanding the tradeoffs are important. To wirelessly share your PowerPoint, Keynote, or spreadsheet to a projector screen from your computer, media player, or mobile device – you need two things.įirst, your screen mirroring system has to capture and wirelessly transmit the video signal that normally goes through a cable. I contacted Fido again last night when it happened again and another appointment was scheduled.
